too ... toー

This argument is difficult/easy to follow.（この議論について行くのは難しい／簡単だ）
いわゆる tough 構文というヤツである。

The stone is heavy to lift.
The girl is beautiful to look at.

もある意味その親戚かな？「重いもの」は持ち上げるのが「難しい」し，「美しい人」は見ているのが「楽」（＝苦痛を感じない (^^;;)）。

ただし，この２つは It is heavy to lift the stone. / It is beautiful to look at the girl. と書き換えられないところが普通のtough構文とは異なる。

これまでの文にtooを加えると，

This argument is too difficult to follow.
The stone is too heavy to lift.
The girl is too ugly to look at.

となり，いずれも文法的に正しい。

This air is too dirty to breathe.　も文法的にには正しい。

でもこれは too を削除し，This air is dirty to breathe. とはしないだろう。

うーむ，英語は難しい。

Even the largest cell, a fertilized egg, is too small to be seen with the naked eye.

なんていうのもある。toの後を受け身にできるかできないかでもまた分類ができそうだ。
